What are the Benefits of Using Essential Oils During Christmas?

No matter what time of year, essential oils have many benefits ranging from decreasing stress to even relieving pain.  The specific benefits will depend on which essential oil is used.

Christmas is a time when many people feel down.  It can be caused by overwhelm, stress, anxiety, and loneliness.  Feelings of depression can be amplified.  Some people also experience low energy levels.

Note: Please speak to a mental health professional if you need to.  Essential oils are not a subsitute for seeking medical advice.

What Essential Oils Make a Christmas Scent?

My favorite smells during the holiday season are cinnamon, gingerbread, peppermint, and fresh Christmas trees.  Depending on your holiday traditions, there might be other scents that you associate with Christmas.

Some of the most popular essential oils to use during Christmas are:

  • Pine – Get that Christmas tree scent while relieving stress, helping with respiratory problems, and relieving pain.
  • Fir – While it smells similar to pine, it can boost your immune system, reduce fatigue, and help with pain.
  • Clove – It will remind you of those glasses of mulled wine.  Clove can keep you warm and healthy during the holidays.
  • Cinnamon – This scent will remind you of many holiday dishes and beverages like eggnog.  It can help with you memory, provide a warm feeling, and is an anti-inflammatory.
  • Orange – Some families have the tradition of putting oranges in their Christmas stockings.  So an orange scent could remind you of that and boost your mood booster, reduce stress, and lower blood pressure.
  • Nutmeg – Many Christmas dishes use nutmeg too, so this smell might bring on some cravings as well as assisting with respiratory, brain, and cardiovascular health.  It can also relax you and even help you fall asleep.
  • Vanilla – This sweet scent is popular all year, but works well during Christmas time too.  It can help fight depression and anxiety, plus it can be an aphrodisiac.
  • Peppermint – It’s hard to think about the Christmas season without candy canes!  Using peppermint oil can aid in digestion and also relieve pain.  It’s actually one of the best oils for foot pain.
  • Frankincense – As one of the gifts from the wise men to Jesus, it goes hand in hand with Christmas.  It can reduce anxiety and stress, which is something very common during the holiday season.
  • Myrrh – This oil is often paired with Frankincense as it was also a gift from the wise men.  It can help prevent weight gain and support your immune system.

If you are new to using essential oils and want to jump start your Christmas collection, there are sets you can buy.  This will save money when compared to buying each essential oil individually.  Click here to see some of the Christmas essential oils set options.

How to Use Essential Oils During the Christmas Season

When it comes to using essential oils during the holidays, you have several options to choose from.  Feel free to try out different methods to see which on works best for you.

Diffusing

Diffusing is the most common way to use essential oils.  You can either put it in a electric diffuser and turn it on or put the oils in a container with diffuser sticks.  Either way the whole room will be smelling lovely before you know it.

Spray

You can use essential oils to make objects (like a fake Christmas tree) smell nice by using a spray.  Just add a few drops of your Christmas essential oil blend to a spray bottle with water.  Then spray a little bit on fake Christmas trees, wreaths, or linens.

In the Bath or Shower

Essential oils can help you turn a daily ritual into a spa-like experience.  Mix one of the Christmas essential oil blends in with your homemade bath salts.   These bath salts can also be used in the shower.

During Massage

If you are using massage oils or lotion to lubricate the skin, you can easy add in some Christmas oils. If you go this route, be sure to read our tips for using essential oils for massage and how to warm up essential oils as this can really heighten the massage experience.

As a Gift

A Christmas essential oil blend in a pretty bottle could make a nice gift especially for someone that is hosting a holiday event in their home.

Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils are highly concentrated so you need to take care when you use any. Always dilute the oil with lotion or carrier oil before applying to the skin.  In some cases, your skin may be sensitive to certain essential oils so you need to be on the lookout for symptoms of irritation such as rash, hives, redness, swelling, or itchiness.

Essential oils made from citrus fruits can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. It’s best to avoid sun exposure after grapefruit, orange, Bergamot, or another citrus oil is used on your skin.

Speak to your doctor before using any essential oils if you are pregnant.  There’s a concern that some essential oils can induce contractions and even result in fetal harm.

Additionally, if you have asthma or another breathing related issue, avoid using a diffuser for essential oils.  Your doctor may suggest some essential oils that can be mixed with a carrier oil or lotion and used on the skin.

It is important to be extra careful when using essential oils for children.  There are certain essential oils that kids should not use and others that need a lower dilution ratio.  Also, be careful to keep the essential oils out of the reach of young children, so they don’t accidentally ingest them.  Get more specifics about safety with essential oils and kids here.

Remember for the most part essential oils are not tested for effectiveness or safety.  Also, they do not last forever, so check out our guide to storing essential oils.
